Step-by-step instructions
Follow these steps
Follow the written instructions in order; illustrations are optional, not a requirement for a complete guide. If a component or label looks different on your car, stop and check your own manual.
- Step 1 of 7
Confirm the first-generation NHP10 and the 2017 manual edition
Identify the chassis code and fitted cabin-filter arrangement before selecting a replacement. The June 2017 Aqua manual recommends replacement every 20,000 km, or 10,000 km in high-traffic, dusty or cold-region use. Do not substitute the different schedule in newer-generation Aqua manuals.
- Step 2 of 7
Turn the power switch off for the fitted key system
Park safely and switch the car off. Toyota's 2017 manual separates ordinary key systems, which must be turned to LOCK, from Smart Entry & Start systems, which must be switched OFF. Confirm the correct control before working behind the glove box.
- Step 3 of 7
Open the glove box and release its damper stay
Open the glove box and locate the damper stay at its side. Disconnect the damper-stay pin as shown in Toyota's manual drawing. Support the glove box so the damper and the plastic hinge fittings are not pulled or twisted.
- Step 4 of 7
Release the upper side tabs and lower glove-box catches
Press the glove-box side walls inward one side at a time to clear the upper stoppers, then release the lower engagement tabs following the Toyota illustration. Do not force any hinge or clip if the actual dashboard arrangement differs from the cited 2017 NHP10 design.
- Step 5 of 7
Release the cabin-filter cover rather than forcing its clips
Find the cabin-filter housing behind the glove box. Release the cover lock, slide the cover in the manufacturer's indicated direction and lift it out of its retaining tabs. The lock and tab actions are separately shown on page 300.
- Step 6 of 7
Replace the filter with its UP arrow pointing upward
Remove the used filter and install the correct new element without crushing its edges. For the Toyota filter shown in the cited manual, the printed UP marking must point upward. Do not confuse an aftermarket filter's AIR FLOW arrow with Toyota's UP marking; follow its own installation directions if markings differ.
- Step 7 of 7
Refit all covers and test the ventilation
Install the filter cover and glove box in the reverse order, making sure the latches, lower catches and damper stay are properly seated. Restore ventilation and check for normal airflow and abnormal rattles. Toyota says the filter is replaced, not cleaned with water or compressed air.
