Step-by-step instructions
Follow these steps
Follow the written instructions in order; illustrations are optional, not a requirement for a complete guide. If a component or label looks different on your car, stop and check your own manual.
- Step 1 of 7
Confirm the ZVW30 manual edition and whether solar ventilation is fitted
Use this procedure only when the glove-box and filter housing match Toyota's May 2010 ZVW30 manual. Without solar ventilation, Toyota lists cleaning every 15,000 km and replacement every 30,000 km, shortened to 7,500 km / 15,000 km in heavy-traffic, dusty or cold-region use. With solar ventilation, Toyota lists cleaning every 7,500 km and replacement every 15,000 km.
- Step 2 of 7
Switch the POWER switch OFF before opening the filter housing
Park securely and set the POWER switch OFF before starting. If the car has the solar ventilation system, Toyota specifically requires its ventilation switch to be OFF before filter cleaning or replacement so the air-conditioning system cannot start unexpectedly while you are working.
- Step 3 of 7
Open the glove box and disconnect its damper-stay pin
Open and empty the glove box, then locate the damper stay at its side. Release the damper-stay pin using the arrangement shown in Toyota's manual, supporting the glove box rather than pulling it against the stay.
- Step 4 of 7
Release the upper and lower glove-box tabs
Press the glove-box side walls inward to release the upper tabs one side at a time, then disengage the lower tabs and remove the glove box. Do not force plastic hinges or clips if the actual dashboard design differs from the cited ZVW30 layout.
- Step 5 of 7
Remove the cabin-filter cover and old element
Locate the cabin-filter case behind the glove box and remove its cover as Toyota shows. Slide the used filter out carefully, noting its orientation and keeping debris from falling deeper into the HVAC housing.
- Step 6 of 7
Install the replacement with Toyota's UP arrow facing upward
Fit the correct replacement filter so the Toyota UP marking points upward. Do not assume an aftermarket AIR FLOW arrow means the same thing as an UP marking; follow the replacement filter maker's orientation instructions when its markings use a different convention.
- Step 7 of 7
Refit the cover and glove box, then verify normal airflow
Reinstall the filter cover and glove box in the reverse order, reconnecting the lower tabs, upper tabs and damper stay securely. With the filter installed, restore ventilation and check normal airflow. Toyota warns not to operate the air conditioner without the filter in place.
