Step-by-step instructions
Follow these steps
Follow the written instructions in order; illustrations are optional, not a requirement for a complete guide. If a component or label looks different on your car, stop and check your own manual.
- Step 1 of 7
Verify the GB7 generation and smart-key housing
Confirm the vehicle is a 2016–2024-era Freed Hybrid GB7 and the key housing matches Honda's 2017 Freed Hybrid owner-manual drawing. Honda specifies a CR2032 battery. Weak range or failure of the indicator to illuminate on button press can indicate the cell needs replacement.
Check before moving onAll steps ↑Your key matches the archived Honda smart-key drawing and the replacement is a CR2032.
- Step 2 of 7
Prepare a safe, dry surface
Place the key on a clean, dry surface. Keep children away from loose button batteries and retain the old cell for suitable battery recycling. Avoid water, excessive heat and loose debris around the key's electronics.
All steps ↑ - Step 3 of 7
Pull out the internal mechanical key using the lever
Hold the built-in key release lever and withdraw the mechanical key as Honda illustrates. Keep it separate until the housing has been completely reassembled.
Check before moving onAll steps ↑The built-in key has been removed without forcing its latch.
- Step 4 of 7
Carefully release the key cover
Honda's 2017 Freed Hybrid manual instructs owners to wrap a coin in a cloth when lifting the smart-key cover to reduce scratching. Work slowly around the indicated opening point and do not twist the case with force.
All steps ↑ - Step 5 of 7
Remove the old cell and insert CR2032 with matching polarity
Before removing the discharged cell, look at how the positive and negative faces are oriented in the battery compartment. Replace it with a fresh CR2032 in the orientation shown in the Honda diagram. Leave electrical contacts and the internal circuit assembly untouched.
Check before moving onAll steps ↑The cell is secure and its orientation matches the indicated + and − markings.
- Step 6 of 7
Close the cover firmly and refit the mechanical key
Return the cover to its original position, press its edges together until fully seated, and slide the mechanical key back into place. Honda specifically warns that an incompletely fitted cover can reduce the unit's water resistance.
Check before moving onAll steps ↑The cover sits flush without any open seam, and the internal key is retained.
- Step 7 of 7
Test the buttons near your Freed Hybrid
Use lock and unlock functions near the vehicle and confirm that the buttons respond normally. If functionality remains unreliable, have the actual key checked rather than repeatedly levering open a damaged cover.
