Step-by-step instructions
Follow these steps
Follow the written instructions in order; illustrations are optional, not a requirement for a complete guide. If a component or label looks different on your car, stop and check your own manual.
- Step 1 of 7
Check the original JF3 smart key and battery type
Confirm the key belongs to the 2017-generation JF3 N-BOX system and matches the owner's-manual shape. Honda lists CR1632 for this smart key. Reduced lock/unlock range or failure of the key indicator to light can mean a depleted battery. Do not buy a CR2032 simply because other Honda models use it.
Check before moving onAll steps ↑Original fob and CR1632 specification match the 2017 Honda owner's-manual key.
- Step 2 of 7
Use a clean surface and protect children from loose cells
Keep the work surface dry and small parts contained. Place spare and discharged coin cells out of reach of children and pets immediately. Avoid heat, water and bending the case.
All steps ↑ - Step 3 of 7
Orient the key with its H logo facing upward
Honda's 2017 manual specifies holding the fob with the H-mark facing upward before opening the cover. Use the illustrated opening location rather than guessing at the nearest visible seam.
Check before moving onAll steps ↑The cover orientation matches the exact Honda diagram.
- Step 4 of 7
Separate the cover using a cloth-wrapped coin
Place a coin wrapped in soft cloth at the approved opening position and carefully lift the cover. Honda recommends a protective cloth to avoid scratching the housing. Stop before damaging the retaining clips; this fob's procedure is different from Honda keys that begin by removing a mechanical key.
All steps ↑ - Step 5 of 7
Replace the CR1632 with matching + / − orientation
Observe the polarity of the original coin cell and the Honda diagram before lifting it out. Install a fresh CR1632 with the same documented orientation, taking care not to distort the battery contact or move internal electronics. Keep fingers off the flat faces where practical.
Check before moving onAll steps ↑Correct cell size is seated securely and + / − orientation matches the holder.
- Step 6 of 7
Close the entire case until its seams are flush
Replace the cover carefully and check that no retaining edge is lifted. Honda warns that failing to secure the cover correctly can reduce water resistance and lead to malfunction.
Check before moving onAll steps ↑Cover is firmly closed on all sides with no open gap.
- Step 7 of 7
Test the buttons and store the spent cell safely
Use the buttons near your N-BOX to verify normal locking/unlocking and indicator response. Keep the used battery securely out of children's reach before taking it to appropriate battery disposal or recycling. If the key remains unreliable, seek professional inspection instead of forcing repeated disassembly.
