Actual battery part
OEM-compatible group size, chemistry (flooded, EFB or AGM as approved), cold-cranking amps (CCA), terminal positions, physical hold-down, reserve capacity and any vent tube. A cheaper chemistry is not automatically compatible.
The part is only one line of the bill. Compare the correct flooded or AGM battery with testing, access labor, battery-management requirements, fees and warranty—after confirming the original battery is really faulty.
Scope: United States · ordinary 12V starter/auxiliary batteries only. Model-year, engine, original battery chemistry, BMS and accessibility control real fitment and service. Not EV/hybrid high-voltage traction batteries.
Applies to: US 12V quote follow-up using Ford’s 2024 Bronco Sport Changing the 12V Battery section as one vehicle-specific example. AAA price bands remain dated parts-only guidance, rechecked 20 October 2026; not a new installed price or a high-voltage battery estimate.
Ford says an automatic-transmission vehicle can shift firmly at first after battery disconnection or replacement while its adaptive strategy relearns. That specific note is useful when discussing a return visit: it is not proof that another battery or transmission is required simply because the first drive feels different.
It is also not permission to dismiss a persistent or unsafe symptom. Record when it began, warning messages and the conditions, then have the workshop compare them with the actual model’s instructions. This Bronco Sport example cannot establish a normal relearn period for every US car.

The same Ford section describes an engine-management power-hold function and requires a minimum two-minute wait before battery disconnection. That is a removal precaution, not a universal battery-registration fee or an instruction to perform the work yourself.
Ask the installer which actual post-replacement steps were required and completed, and keep the diagnostic results with the invoice. The existing AAA parts-only ranges cannot price that work without the vehicle and location. No universal labour amount, core refund or reset charge is invented here.

Cracked, bulging, leaking, hot or smoking batteries need professional assistance. Acid, short circuits and explosive gases are hazards. Do not disconnect terminals, bypass safety electronics or touch high-voltage hybrid/EV components to investigate a no-start. If a charging-system warning is accompanied by failing lights or loss of power, stop safely and seek help.
This is for 12V batteries only. Hybrid traction batteries and EV high-voltage packs need separate high-voltage-qualified diagnosis; the prices below cannot be applied to those repairs.
AAA's published examples provide these broad battery part-price ranges. They are not installed-price quotations, brand-specific offers or price guarantees, and the correct replacement can fall outside them. An installed cost depends on your vehicle, location and service provider. See AAA's battery part-price methodology ↗.
| 12V battery chemistry | AAA approximate part range | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Standard flooded lead-acid | $45–$150 | AAA approximate PART-cost range; do not assume this chemistry is approved for a start-stop car. |
| AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) | $150–$250 | AAA approximate PART-cost range; many vehicles with greater electrical demands require AGM. Confirm by exact model. |
These are examples of parts pricing, not an estimate of the installed total for your vehicle. The part-price comparison itself also does not support substituting a flooded battery for a factory AGM or EFB.
For an actual installed estimate, AAA's vehicle and ZIP-based battery quote ↗ asks for year, make, model and engine. Its disclosures warn that registration/reset requirements, difficult-access installation, taxes, environmental fees and processing charges may change what you pay.
Ask for an itemized estimate before comparing a walk-in parts-store battery with roadside mobile service or a dealership. Without a like-for-like scope, the cheapest number can exclude work your car actually needs.
OEM-compatible group size, chemistry (flooded, EFB or AGM as approved), cold-cranking amps (CCA), terminal positions, physical hold-down, reserve capacity and any vent tube. A cheaper chemistry is not automatically compatible.
Ask whether a printed battery load/health test and starter/charging-system tests are included, especially after recurrent no-start symptoms.
May vary for under-seat, trunk or concealed installations. Some retail installs are included; ask before comparing a parts-only price with a mobile or dealer quote.
Applicable only when the actual vehicle's manufacturer procedure requires it; obtain a line-item explanation instead of accepting a universal charge.
Confirm sales tax, recycling or core deposit/refund, mobile callout and payment surcharges. AAA warns that its displayed quotes can exclude several of these.
Check warranty replacement versus proration, roadside installation coverage, date of manufacture, warning lights and charging after service.
The written quote should identify the year, make, model, engine, original battery chemistry and group size, battery part number and warranty, diagnostic results, installation labor, any actual vehicle-specific reset, recycling/core terms, taxes and the final installed price. Avoid selecting a battery by the generic car-model name alone.
A no-start, slow crank, battery-shaped warning light and repeated discharge can have different causes. A resting battery voltage alone cannot demonstrate the battery's load capacity or the charging system's condition. AAA recommends separating battery testing from alternator/charging checks rather than replacing both by guesswork.
| What the owner notices | What it may mean | Evidence-led next step |
|---|---|---|
| Slow crank or intermittent no-start | A weak 12V battery is possible but so are poor connections, insufficient charge, starter faults and more. | Request a battery health/load test AND starting/charging test. Verify terminals before ordering a replacement. |
| Battery light on while engine runs | A charging-system problem is possible; changing the 12V battery alone may not fix it. | Pull over safely if the vehicle warns of electrical shutdown, dimming or loss of power; arrange alternator/charging diagnosis. |
| Replacement battery goes flat again | Parasitic load, undercharging, repeated short trips or wrong battery specification may be involved. | Have charging output and key-off current draw assessed before authorizing another battery. |
| 12V starts the vehicle but warning persists | A battery-management calibration, vehicle code or unrelated charging fault could be involved. | Check manufacturer-defined post-replacement registration/relearn steps and stored fault codes. |
| Hybrid or EV reports high-voltage battery fault | This is NOT an ordinary 12V starter battery quote. High-voltage traction packs have separate warnings and procedures. | Do not touch orange high-voltage cables or attempt traction-battery service; use an HV-qualified workshop. |
Ford's 2024 US Bronco Sport battery replacement instructions ↗ require a replacement of exactly the same battery specification. Ford also lists features that may need restoring after disconnection, including window bounce-back, clock settings and saved radio stations. Its battery warnings ↗ distinguish vehicles with auto-start-stop and caution about vent tubes and models with multiple batteries.
What that means for the estimate: a quote must verify the right original battery specification and any real post-replacement service requirements. It does not mean every Ford requires battery registration, all Bronco Sports use the same battery part number, or a 2024 Ford battery procedure applies to Honda, Toyota or a different model year.
Some manufacturers require battery management resets or relearning. Have the technician confirm the exact manual or service bulletin for your VIN rather than paying for a procedure merely because a generic website says it's needed.
CarFactBook separates 12V auxiliary batteries, hybrid high-voltage batteries and coin-cell smart keys. These existing exact-vehicle references illustrate why the proper chassis and market matter; they are not US price quotes or interchangeable fitment recommendations.
Read published battery specifications before comparing quotes; verify original equipment.

Why a chassis code and stop-start battery specification matter; not a universal Q-85 recommendation.
For the 12V BATTERY PART alone, AAA's broad examples are about $45–$150 for standard flooded and $150–$250 for AGM. This excludes the cost of any required diagnosis, installation, registration, taxes or fees. Obtain a quote by exact year, make, model, engine and ZIP code.
The appropriate battery is the chemistry required for that specific car. Some vehicles require AGM or EFB because of their charging systems and stop-start load; do not downgrade a factory AGM to flooded merely to save the part-price difference.
Some vehicles do. AAA's own quote tool flags possible registration resets. For example, Ford's 2024 US Bronco Sport owner manual specifies same-spec replacement and documents post-disconnection feature resets; other vehicles can require different procedures. Verify by VIN and service information.
Not without checking the warning's meaning and the charging system. An alternator, cable or other electrical issue may be responsible, and a new battery may not solve it.
No. A 12V auxiliary/starter battery and a high-voltage hybrid or EV traction battery are different systems with separate diagnosis, safety requirements and prices.

AAA's approximate standard flooded $45–$150 and AGM $150–$250 PART prices, not installed invoices or guaranteed battery-store offers.
Year, make, model, engine and location are required; possible difficult-install charges, battery registration reset, sales and environmental taxes and processing fees are called out.
Explains standard flooded lead-acid, AGM and EFB differences and why the car's original specification must control replacement.
Similar no-start symptoms require battery and charging-system testing rather than treating replacement as a diagnosis.
Vehicle-specific OEM example: Ford requires the same battery specification and documents some feature resets after disconnection. It is not a fitment listing for other Fords.
Original Ford warns auto-start-stop variants have a different battery requirement, venting matters and multiple installed batteries may make generic disconnection unsafe.
