Golf Mk2 GTI engine outputs depend on the exact version.

The short answer

Did all Mk2 Golf GTIs use the same 1.8-litre engine output?

No. Volkswagen's original Golf II GTI archive separates its 1,781 cc 8-valve 112 PS, 16-valve 139 PS, regulated-catalyst 16V 129 PS and G60 160 PS versions. Even a shared 1.8-litre badge does not prove the same output, electronics, injection or replacement parts.

Applicable to: Manufacturer German-market historical generation: Golf II GTI factory designation 19E (A2), series 1984–1991; individual engine configurations span different years and emissions versions. Do not apply to every export-market VIN.

02 / Before you use these values

Match the exact vehicle.

Check 1

Confirm whether the vehicle is the Mk2/A2 rather than a Mk1 or Mk3; engine output alone does not prove year.

Check 2

Differentiate standard GTI 8V, GTI 16V, catalytic 16V and G60 by the original engine identification and emissions equipment.

Check 3

For parts, Volkswagen Classic Parts provides Mk2 model-year filters; its page notes its VIN-accelerated search works only from 1998, so a 1980s car needs manual catalog/engine verification.

Check 4

Do not substitute any modern GTI spark plug, oil grade, coolant quantity or transmission capacity based on the generic GTI name.

Where the numbers came from

Engine displacements, kilowatts and metric PS are transcribed from Volkswagen's model-specific archived Golf II GTI engine table. The original manufacturer factory code establishes which generation this comparison covers. Volkswagen Classic Parts shows model-year and category selections, but this page has not inferred a single universally fitting SKU. This page is an original explanation of limited factual specifications. CarFactBook has not inferred an exact VIN, fitted replacement part, global-equivalent manual or unpublished service quantity.

Source count: 2. The original manufacturer's vehicle-specific manual and labels take priority if your exact car differs from these listed reference configurations.
