Tools and materials

  • One CR2032 coin-cell battery for the documented Honda smart key
  • Clean, soft cloth
  • Coin to help release the cover as shown in the manual

Follow these steps

Follow the written instructions in order; illustrations are optional, not a requirement for a complete guide. If a component or label looks different on your car, stop and check your own manual.

  1. Step 1 of 7

Confirm the GP5 smart-key type and CR2032 battery

Verify that your Fit Hybrid is the GP5 generation covered by Honda's 2013–2020 Fit archive, and that you have the Honda smart key shown in the matching owner manual. Honda specifies a CR2032 button battery for this smart-key type. A weak or inconsistent operating range or a key indicator that no longer lights can indicate a discharged cell.

    Check before moving on

The original key matches the Honda manual and the replacement cell is marked CR2032.

    All steps ↑
  2. Step 2 of 7

Choose a clean work surface and secure the loose battery

Work on a dry, well-lit surface away from small children and pets. Keep both the replacement coin cell and the removed battery out of reach. Do not open the key next to a drain or an area where tiny components could be lost.

    All steps ↑
  3. Step 3 of 7

Release and withdraw the built-in mechanical key

Operate the release lever on the Honda smart key and pull the built-in mechanical key out of its housing. Do not pull against the latch; follow the lever direction shown in the Honda owner's manual.

    Check before moving on

The mechanical key slides out without damage.

    All steps ↑
  4. Step 4 of 7

Open the smart-key cover without damaging its edges

Follow Honda's case-opening diagram. Wrap a coin in a soft cloth and use it to separate the cover gently at the indicated opening point. Do not substitute excessive leverage or pry against the circuit board.

    Check before moving on

Both case halves separate without cracked tabs or distorted plastic.

    All steps ↑
  5. Step 5 of 7

Replace the CR2032 while preserving the original polarity

Observe the orientation of the existing coin cell before removing it. Take out the old battery, avoid moving the contact springs or electronic module, and seat the new CR2032 with its positive and negative faces oriented exactly as the Honda manual and holder show. Never bend a contact to force a cell into place.

    Check before moving on

The new CR2032 sits flush and the polarity matches the holder and manual.

    All steps ↑
  6. Step 6 of 7

Securely close the cover and reinstall the mechanical key

Align the cover and close it fully along the edges, then return the mechanical key until its release mechanism holds it. Honda warns that an incompletely closed smart key can lose weather resistance.

    Check before moving on

The cover edges sit flush and the mechanical key is firmly retained.

    All steps ↑
  7. Step 7 of 7

Verify the key operates the correct vehicle

Near the vehicle, check the lock and unlock buttons and the key's normal indicator behavior. If it still performs poorly, verify the new cell's seating and specification once; do not repeatedly force open a damaged case. Honda advises dealer assistance when the case or components may have been harmed.
