Identify before you buy
The warning state controls the next question
| What you have | What the evidence establishes | Next owner decision |
|---|---|---|
| Steady DPF lamp after normal lamp check | Manual has a conditional accumulated-PM response | Read the matching complete branch; ask Mazda if conditions cannot be established. |
| Flashing DPF lamp | Mazda calls for immediate inspection | Do not substitute a drive cycle, clearing codes or a reset. |
| Oil above dipstick X position | Mazda directs oil replacement; DPF-related fuel dilution can raise level | Qualified level/service assessment, specified oil and appropriate data reset. |

Step-by-step instructions
Choose the correct maintenance schedule
Use these source-backed checks to identify the applicable service interval. This article does not teach hands-on engine servicing. If a component or label looks different on your car, stop and check your own manual.
- Step 1 of 5
Confirm the diesel and matching early DJ manual
Mazda's index identifies DJ5FS-100001 onward in the early DJ group, with diesel launch from October 2014. Use the SKYACTIV-D 1.5 section; petrol Demio and later Mazda2 advice is not interchangeable. Establish the full chassis and actual production period before selecting a DPF or oil-service reference.
All steps ↑ - Step 2 of 5
Separate steady illumination from flashing
Mazda describes a normal brief lamp check, a steady DPF lamp for accumulated particulate matter, and flashing that requires immediate Mazda inspection. Do not treat flashing as an invitation to attempt a longer drive or a reset. Record the exact lamp state and other messages safely; a lamp alone does not identify a failed sensor, injector or DPF assembly.
All steps ↑ - Step 3 of 5
Use the exact conditional branch instead of a generic regeneration tip
The cited manual explains that repeated short trips, prolonged idling and very low-speed operation can prevent automatic particulate removal. Its steady-lamp driving branch has engine-temperature, speed and duration conditions. Read that complete branch only when the car and conditions match and driving is safe; if you cannot establish them, consult Mazda. This page supplies no forced-regeneration, emissions-bypass or stationary hot-exhaust procedure.
All steps ↑ - Step 4 of 5
Keep the oil-level decision separate from topping up
Mazda explains that fuel can enter the oil during particulate removal and that oil above the dipstick X position requires an oil change. Do not interpret a rising level as evidence that the engine needs more oil. Ask the workshop to assess the actual level, use the specified diesel oil and include the required oil-data reset after the appropriate service. No generic reset sequence is supplied here.
All steps ↑ - Step 5 of 5
Ask for findings before an expensive diesel-parts order
Give the workshop the driving pattern, DPF lamp state, oil-level finding and dated oil/filter history. Ask what diagnostic evidence supports a proposed DPF, sensor, injector or other component and confirm exact serial-specific fitment. In New Zealand or Kenya, retain the JDM source scope with the service record; climate, fuel availability, prices and local emissions rules are not assumed by this article.
