2025 Silverado Coolant Capacity: Whole System or Service Refill?

The short answer

Can a 2025 Silverado owner use the cooling-system capacity as the amount to pour in after a drain?

No. Chevrolet lists approximately 11.8 L for L3B, 13.1 L for L84 and 12.6 L for L87, then says those figures cover the entire cooling system and its components. They do not establish how much a particular drain removes or how much a low reservoir needs.

Applicable to: 2025 United States Chevrolet Silverado 1500 gasoline: 2.7L L4 L3B, 5.3L V8 L84 and 6.2L V8 L87. Original owner manual 87855274 B, 31 October 2024 revision, GMNA U.S./Canada/Mexico/Paraguay edition. Existing catalog codes are engine/market labels, not complete VIN or cab/drive configurations. Not Silverado HD, EV or Duramax diesel.

Read the capacity with the operation it describes

Applies to: Original 2025 gasoline owner-manual reference, printed pp.349–351, 427, 430 and 434–435. Confirm the actual engine, equipment and current GM instructions before servicing.

A complete-system reference cannot measure the coolant left behind

A workshop drain can leave fluid in passages and other components. Chevrolet’s capacity footnote explicitly includes the complete cooling system; treating that table as a guaranteed refill would erase its scope. Keep the engine RPO and the actual service operation on the work order.

A reservoir that reads low is another question. It does not mean that the engine needs another full 11.8, 13.1 or 12.6 litres. The manual calls for a level surface for the check and gives its own inspection and filling instructions. Persistent loss or a leak needs diagnosis rather than repeated full-capacity additions.

Identify the coolant and preserve the safety instructions

The original gasoline section names DEX-COOL and a 50/50 mixture with clean, drinkable water. Its caution also names GM standard GMW3420. An aftermarket bottle selected only by colour is not established as the specified product by these references.

Do not open a hot pressurised cooling system. The manual also warns that electric fans can start with the engine stopped and that a leak must be repaired before driving. These quantities are not a bleeding sequence, a pressure-cap removal guide or permission to run an overheating engine.

Do not choose a service interval from an unresolved discrepancy

Printed page 350 describes the coolant as designed to remain for five years or 150,000 miles. Printed page 427 instead calls for draining and filling at 150,000 miles or six years. Both use an earlier-of-time-or-distance condition, but the time limits differ.

This article records that disagreement instead of silently selecting one number. Ask Chevrolet or a qualified workshop to confirm the current instruction for the VIN and service history. The capacity rows remain readable as bounded references; they do not resolve the timing conflict or extend coverage to diesel, HD or electric trucks.

Match the exact vehicle.

Check 1

Retain the continued entire-system footnote on printed 435 / PDF 436; a drain-and-fill or top-up amount is not supplied by these rows.

Check 2

The gasoline coolant section specifies a 50/50 mix of clean, drinkable water and DEX-COOL meeting GMW3420; colour alone is not an approval.

Check 3

The manual gives conflicting five-year and six-year coolant timing statements. Confirm the applicable VIN-specific GM instruction; neither is promoted here as a universal interval.

Where the numbers came from

Downloaded the original GM PDF and visually checked the 2025 cover, part 87855274 B and both capacity pages together (printed 434–435 / PDF 435–436). Read the full gasoline cooling section (printed 349–351 / PDF 350–352), recommended fluid row (430 / PDF 431) and normal schedule (427 / PDF 428). The coolant narrative says five years while the schedule says six; no inferred reconciliation or dry/drain refill is authored.
