Toyota RAV4 transmission fluid: CVT FE is not ATF WS.

The short answer

Which transmission fluid does a Toyota RAV4 use?

Toyota Japan's June 2024 manuals distinguish the conventional petrol RAV4's CVT Fluid FE (8.6 L reference capacity), HEV's Toyota Genuine ATF WS (3.9 L) and PHEV's ATF WS (4.4 L). These are manufacturer reference capacities, not verified drain-and-refill amounts.

Applicable to: JAPAN June 2024 Toyota RAV4 conventional CVT, hybrid transaxle and plug-in hybrid transaxle service data. Market, engine and generation apply; not US or European fitment.

RAV4 service planning: the fluid name and the operation both matter

Applies to: Toyota Japan June 2024 conventional petrol CVT, HEV and PHEV manual editions; not another market or an inferred drain/refill procedure.

Select the powertrain before the product

The petrol and hybrid rows do not name interchangeable fluids. A bottle labelled for a CVT in another Toyota is not automatically suitable here, and the RAV4 name alone does not select a fluid. Match the actual engine, powertrain and manual edition first.

Toyota’s maintenance-data table directs owners to consult a dealer when replacement is necessary. Its reference capacity does not establish an ordinary drain quantity, level-check procedure or a top-up amount for an unidentified gearbox.

The same ATF name does not make HEV and PHEV capacities identical

The hybrid and plug-in entries both name ATF WS, but Toyota lists distinct reference capacities in their separate chapters. Keep the source row with the configuration rather than choosing whichever quantity appears in a general search result.

A transmission warning or new driveline symptom is not diagnosed by a fluid chart. Record the message and operating conditions for the repairer. Do not assume that adding a reference-system quantity will cure a symptom or that a similar US-market RAV4 shares these Japanese service data.

02 / Before you use these values

Match the exact vehicle.

Check 1

Confirm the actual Japanese-market powertrain and manufacturer's applicable manual. An MXAA gasoline CVT fluid is not interchangeable with the hybrid/PHEV transaxle fluid.

Check 2

Toyota tells owners to consult a dealer if transmission-fluid replacement is needed. Do not treat these reference figures as a service drain amount, fluid-change procedure or a top-up target.

Check 3

Do not assume a different national-market RAV4 or newer generation shares this fluid or capacity.
