Same 1197 cc displacement does not make Swift Z12 and WagonR K12N interchangeable.

The short answer

Is the newer Indian Maruti Swift's 1197 cc engine the same as the WagonR 1.2 K12N?

No. Maruti Suzuki's Swift Z12 manufacturer specification lists three cylinders and 1,197 cc, while the India WagonR 1.2 K12N original manufacturer specifications describe a four-cylinder, 1,197 cc petrol engine. Similar engine displacement alone cannot establish part, plug, filter, oil-service or transmission interchangeability.

Applicable to: India Swift original Z12 three-cylinder manufacturer specification versus Indian WagonR 1.2 K12N four-cylinder brochure edition. Not the previous Swift K12 series, Japan-market Swift or every WagonR build year.

Before a Swift service: the same displacement does not select the oil table

Applies to: India new-generation Z12E Swift, current official manual 99011M75T08-74W (cover August 2026), versus the separately documented K12N WagonR. Original comparison values remain unchanged.

The engine distinction now leads to a service decision

The original comparison separates the three-cylinder Z12E Swift from the four-cylinder K12N WagonR despite their shared 1,197 cc displacement. The newly retrieved Swift manual supplies its own Z12E specification and oil/filter table; a displacement match is not a reason to use the WagonR refill.

The current Swift file labels 3.1 L specifically as an approximate oil-and-filter replacement. That statement is not a new catalog fact or an oil-only quantity. Use the dedicated service article for the document boundary, product specification and operation-specific limits.

A current manual is not approval for an older Swift

Maruti’s directory selects this petrol document for cars sold on or after 9 July 2024. Its current cover is dated August 2026, while an interior imprint retains older revision text. Match the delivered manual rather than treating the download date as the vehicle’s model year.

Earlier K12M/K12N Swift engines and CNG supplements remain separate references. The manual’s existence closes a current-edition evidence gap; it does not establish a historical oil fill for every Swift with a similar badge.

02 / Before you use these values

Match the exact vehicle.

Check 1

Verify actual engine code Z12 versus K12N before ordering spark plugs, ignition coils, filters, mounting components or an engine service.

Check 2

An identical 1197 cc displacement is not a valid fitment statement: three cylinders versus four are mechanically different.

Check 3

Older Swift cars can carry different engine families. Do not use this comparison as an oil-service specification without the exact model-year owner manual.

Where the numbers came from

The original Maruti Suzuki Swift engine brochure gives 1,197 cc with three cylinders; manufacturer WagonR India documentation gives a separate K12N 1.2 L engine with four cylinders. This is an identity comparison, not a fitment or maintenance instruction.
